What Your LinkedIn Banner Is Actually For

  • Job seekers vs. established professionals

Job seekers benefit from a banner that signals what role or industry they're targeting, while established professionals often do better with a clean brand-color background and no text, letting their headline do that work instead.

  • Company pages: consistency over cleverness

Since your company logo overlaps the bottom-left of the banner, the safest designs put a simple background or brand color there and reserve the readable center-right area for a tagline, rather than a busy photo competing with the logo.

  • Recruiters scan banners fast

A recruiter skimming search results sees your banner behind your small circular photo for a second at most - strong contrast and minimal detail reads faster in that glance than a detailed photo collage.

  • Reusing content across formats

A feed post image and an article cover can share the same source photo, but crop each separately (1,200x627 vs. 1,200x644) rather than uploading one file to both slots - even a small ratio mismatch shows as a visibly different crop.

  • When to update your banner

A refresh after a role change, promotion, or launching something new (like a newsletter) keeps your profile feeling current to visitors who've seen it before.

Frequently asked questions

400 x 400 pixels, uploaded as a square. LinkedIn crops it into a circle, so keep your face centered with some margin around the edges rather than filling the entire frame.
They're different sizes entirely. A personal profile banner is 1,584 x 396 pixels (4:1). A company page banner is a much wider 4,200 x 700 pixels (6:1). Reusing one for the other will look stretched or squeezed - they need to be designed separately.
Upload at 4,200 x 700 pixels, even though the banner displays on screen at roughly 1,128 x 191 pixels. LinkedIn's help center recommends the larger upload size specifically because it keeps the banner sharp on retina and 4K displays - uploading at only the display size works, but looks visibly softer.
LinkedIn shows the same banner file across devices but crops it differently on mobile than desktop, and your profile photo also covers part of the bottom-left corner. Keep important text and logos centered or toward the right rather than near the edges.
A standard feed post or link preview works best at 1,200 x 627 pixels. An article cover (the hero image at the top of a LinkedIn article) is a slightly different ratio at 1,200 x 644 pixels - close, but not identical.
JPG for photographic banners and post images, since it keeps file sizes smaller at the same visual quality. PNG is better for graphics with sharp text or logos, where JPG compression can introduce visible artifacts around hard edges. LinkedIn doesn't accept GIF for banners or company covers.
Company page banners have a stricter 3 MB file size limit than personal profile images, which allow up to 8 MB. If your file is under that limit but still rejected, double-check it's saved as JPG or PNG - GIF isn't supported for banners.
